Marketing tips

Introduction

Seth Godin is a marketing master and financial lecturer. The book (This is marketing, Seth Godin. 2018) represents apex of decades of marketing. In the book, Godin S tells marketing tips and advice for marketing specialist and people who are interested in marketing. It is all about understanding human and being one. Godin S uses the phrase “You cannot be seen until you learn to see”.

What is marketing

In the first chapter Godin S is writing about working methods and how working hand in hand to solve problems are important. He says that people should always solve problems together. That is related how work in Proakatemia is done. He is also giving tips how to spread your ideas and how to make an impact. He writes about what culture was back in the nineteens and how it is now. Marketing is always solving problem especially customers problem. The marketing culture has been changing a great deal in the span of twenty years. Back in the day, marketing was mass produced ads and advertisements, in tv, newspapers and other marketing channels. Nowadays it is all about finding the right channels to market to the right customers. Quality over quantity generally in marketing.

Godin S wrote that marketing is now everywhere. He is mentioning that you cannot walk on the streets without seeing any ads or commercials. Internet is also full of ads nowadays. People are doing marketing by themselves, being ambassadors of some products. Companies do not need to do it alone anymore. It is called affiliate marketing where influencers can market companies’ products in social media, Instagram, YouTube etc.

Five steps about marketing

Godin S mentioned in chapter two five steps about marketing. The First step is to invest a thing worth making. Meaning that you should not start doing business or product which is not worth making, for example products that already exist etc. In the other hand it is useful to take a product and “hit it with ideas”. Second step is to build it in a way that many people will benefit from it. That is a good start for business, to make a product that will instantly benefit a lot of customers. You can go and ask your friends or family if they like this product and is it worth of making. Step three is to tell a story that matches the built-in narrative and drams of that small group of people. That is the smallest viable market. The fourth and the most important step is to spread the word. A good example of advertising and spreading the word is guerrilla marketing. That means products’ users will tell each other about the product. The Fifth and the last step about marketing is often overlooked, says Godin S. Show up commonly, typically, and generously for year and years. Hard work is always paying back. Maybe not immediately, but some day in future.

Godin S says in chapter three that marketing changes people through stories, contacts, and patience. People often think that marketing does not change people. When you see advertisements everywhere you will start to ambience on them. You start to like those brands and the products even if you do not want to. When you see something everywhere you start to think, what it tastes like, what it smells like etc. That will lead you to the shop to buy or to test that product. Think about that and think about your behaviour. Have you bought any product that was in the ads? Have you bought something that your friend recommended to you? It can be clearly said that marketing change people.

In the chapter five, Godin S is telling psychology to readers. Godin S is going through the perceptions that he has been seeing while working on marketing. Empathy is the heart of marketing. You will need to ask questions from your customer and understand what he or she says. Otherwise, while you do not ask questions or understand the answers, you do not understand the client. That means you cannot sell anything to him or her. Empathy is the key point while marketing or selling so do not forget that, says Godin S. Customers usually do not even know what they really want. By marketing products or doing sales you will need to affect the customers mind set. Colours, logos, brand strategies even company values like sustainability are important things on advertisements. The foundations of marketing are those things. Customers always buy things to use it or test it. Sales and marketing are not easy, says Godin S.

Conclusion

All in all, the book about marketing was very good for people who are interested in marketing. It is nice to read and hear from successful professional of marketing. There were good points in the book, and I tried to list all those important things in this essay. So, all the readers on this essay can first read this essay about the book and then read the whole book. Like Godin S said in the book that guerrilla marketing is the most important marketing strategy. Guerrilla marketing is being done to you right now. Refresh your mind about the most important point what Godin S said, “You cannot be seen until you learn to see”
