After reading this book, I feel like I am becoming the ‘why’ guy. I start to thinking why we do what we do. What actually drives people to do things.

In my opinion, in life there are two master lessons. One is there the science achievement. The other lesson that is rarely mastered is art of fulfilment. Because science is ‘easy’. When you know the rules and use the formula and you get the results.

Sinek gave an interesting example in his TED talk. Why Apple is so innovative. Year after year, they are becoming more innovative than all their competitors. Yet they are just a computer company which produce phones, computers etc. They are just every other computer companies. Which means, they have same access to technology, same talent, same media and so on. Sinek codified how all the inspiring leaders communicate in a simple way, it is called “golden circle”

According to Sinek, the fundamental difference between the “Apples” of the world and everyone else is that they start with “why.”

  1. WHAT: Every organization on the planet knows what they do, which are the products they sell or services they provided.
  2. HOW: Some organizations know how they do it. There are the things that make them special or set them apart from their competition.
  3. WHY: Very few organisations know why they do what they do. Why is not about making money. That is a result. Why is a purpose, cause or belief. It is very reason your organizations exists

There is a saying that there are only two ways to influence human behavior: you can manipulate it or you can inspire it. So for most of entrepreneurs, it is very important to learn how to inspire people. According to Sinek, discovering your why involve setting personal, professional, family and health goals. In other words, the why cannot be profit or money. That is so called the result of creating value.

Secondly, the clarity of “why”, must know what we do. One must be consistent and disciplined with what they do and how they do it, this produces trust and loyalty among employees and consumers. If you do not know why you do what you do how could anybody else?

Thirdly, leaders need following, as a leader, people need to choose to follow you. Trust is everything, and ignites when people can see that someone cares about more than just about personal gain. As a leader, you need to communicate, demonstrate and open people’s eyes to your common ground. Furthermore, communication is not about speaking but listening.

Leaders are like parents, providing opportunity, building confidence, helping others to achieve more than they could ever imaged. All in all, leadership is not about the rank or title. Leaders take risks before anyone else. They care about others more than themselves.

This is a nice summary of the key points of the book. It would have been great if you had reflected also a little more about your business / Jumble “why” as well. How clear was your “why” and how could it be seen in your actions?
