The reading of good to great was to me a very wonderful experience. I can say that thought these years of International Business at TAMK, I’ve done some reading. But it reading that specific book was the same as being hit by a lightning. Sometimes when great companies want to hack into or even copy the product of another corporation they do something called reverse engineering. Which is basically what I used to do as a kid. Lovely mommy buys me a new toy, what did little junior do? Take a screwdriver and open it to see how it works. I loved doing that.

Reading Good to Great was kind of the same to me. A cake recipe. I am very bad at cooking, but now Ill share with you a recipe: Do you want to write a business book? Here it goes

Let’s start with the title:

“The… Effect”

Real examples: The Medici effect, The Jelly effect, The Snowball effect, The Halo effect, The Connect Effect, The experience effect, the boomerang effect, the Influence effect, The rising effect, the compound effect, The moonshot effect, The purpose effect,  The Facebook Effect, The Inside-out Effect, Gen Z effect…

Now comes the great part. Write down some 5 concepts (or more) that you find important for an organization to have (I’ll write the 5 things that come to my mind right now):

  • Be profitable
  • Environmental friendly
  • Growth
  • Good working environment
  • Good employees

BEGGG – the initials of those concepts…

And look at the magic, I’ve got a name! After that, let’s just add some credibility to it:

For Sale on the nearest K-Market

And now is just about developing our concepts by telling real case examples of situations in which they appear. And let’s not forget to include Apple as an example! Shouldn’t it be called The Good to Great Effect?

Fun aside, let me go thought their concepts:

  • Level 5 Leadership: Leaders who are humble, but driven to do what’s best for the company.

The truthful leader is the level 5 one. It is about letting your personal or even career goals aside and think always about what it is the best for the company.

  • First Who, Then What: Get the right people on the bus, then figure out where to go. Find the right people and try them out in different seats on the bus (different positions in the company).

The importance of having the right people to do things. Several times the problem of “having the right person” to do a determined task arises. But not anymore huh?

  • Confront the Brutal Facts: the Stockdale Paradox—confront the brutal truth of the situation, yet at the same time, never give up hope.

First you face it, then…

  • Hedgehog Concept: Three overlapping circles: What lights your fire (“passion”)? What could you be best in the world at (“best at”)? What makes you money (“driving resource”)?

The hedgehog concept can be seen as an excellent way of portraying the importance of personnel satisfaction into overall corporative efficiency.


  • Culture of Discipline: Rinsing the cottage cheese.

Disciplined People: you don’t want to have the wrong people doing wrong things. Disciplined Thought: confronting brutal facts. Disciplined Action: applying correctly the combination of the two previous ones.


After all, the message is: let’s all understand we are individuals, human beings, and the work environment will be better!

    As to the content; main points have been summarised here well. But what does “rinsing the cottage cheese” mean? Also, I would be curious to hear more about your own reflection of the key points of the book. How and what have you seen in practice in the Jumble team or in your own projects so far? What could be improved?
