Imagine it’s a Saturday evening and you are sitting in your living room enjoying your favourite show from television and everything is going well until the commercial break starts. The first commercial starts playing and you are just about to switch the channel when suddenly in the corner of your TV appears a text “Mary and five of your friends like this advert”. Suddenly you aren’t so eager to change the channel anymore and you are curious to see why Mary and five other of your friends like this particular advert. On the next day you are in your car driving to the shop and while you are enjoying your Sunday drive you are listening to the radio. Next one of your favourite songs starts to play, you know one of those songs that make you sing your lungs out and stops you from giving a damn what the person in the car next to you is thinking. Everything is going great until the song ends and you start to hear these most annoying advert jingles that make you want to drive straight to the upcoming traffic. But this time the stupid jingle starts with the following announcement “John and six of your friends like this advert”. And again you are eager to know why does John from your office like this advert before changing the channel. On the next morning while you are reading the days paper while sipping your coffee, you turn the page to the next one which is full of adverts. Usually you would rip the page and throw it on the floor hoping your spouses cat eats it and chokes on it, why? Because you hate cats, remember? Now back to the story. But before you rip the page you notice this one advert has a text printed on top of it saying “Lissie and three of your friends like this advert”. And what you do? Yes you guessed it, you read it.

This is the one of the ways social media marketing is changing the marketing game. Old mass media marketing platforms such as television, radio and newspapers are missing the social interactive part. In a metafora old mass media is like a conversation where you as a client don’t get to speak. Social media marketing is more interactive and you as a client can be a part of a conversation. In my oppinion this is one of the biggest differences between old school mass media and social media marketing.

#1: Your Audience Is On Facebook

Facebook has a user base larger than the population of China! With 1.49 billion members worldwide, and 22 billion ad clicks per year, Facebook is providing businesses with the largest advertising opportunity since search. (M, Withney. 2019).


#2: Facebook Ads Are Cheap

Seriously, they’re practically free! Well, not quite. In fact, the reason you need to advertise is because getting traction from organic activity on your business page won’t yield results. (M, Withney. 2019).


Here is an example from our recent marketing campaign what we did for our glove project JYRY. For only 9,25€ we reached 10 416 different potential clients so with quick math one view cost us about 0,0009€ I call that cheap.


#3: The Targeting Capabilities of Facebook Are Exceptional

Along with tons of different ad types, like video ads, the level of granularity you can get with Facebook targeting capabilities is beyond belief to me. You can literally target President Obama or the Prime Minister of France. Whether it be by behaviors, interests, demographics, connections, age ranges, languages, or locations, you can dig pretty deep with these targeting capabilities and layer them upon each other to ensure you’re getting rid of any questionable, out-of-market clickers.(M, Withney. 2019).


#4: Facebook Is Effective to Push On-the-Fence Leads Down the Funnel

Still nervous? Try out remarketing on Facebook through custom audiences. This strategy works wonders for marketers because remarketing works by targeting an audience that has already visited your site, and therefore is more likely to be interested in your products or offerings at some level.(M, Withney. 2019).


Here is another example what we did with our marketing campaign with JYRY. We started to track users who show interest in our brand. We tracked users who visited our instagram account, visited our webshop and everyone who made a purchase on our webshop. Why? Because now we can specifically target the users who visited our instagram profile and webshop. But what about the users who made a purchase? Well Facebook has a feature to leave a specific target group out of your marketing. Why would you want to do that? Well the users who already made a purchase aren’t the ones we should spend our hard earned cash on, the ones we should spend it however are those who showed interest towards our services but didn’t make a purchase yet.


#5: Facebook Allows You to Find New Qualified Leads Easily

Once you’ve found an audience that converts like crazy, you can clone them. I kid you not! The feature is called “lookalike audiences” where you can take a custom audience and Facebook will reach NEW people who are similar to that audience and therefore likely to be interested in your business.(M, Withney. 2019).
